Apart from the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom, many other rooms deserve a special mention. We often do not pay enough attention to them and leave them as an afterthought. In this article, we bring to you 18 living spaces and lounge areas that can add charm to your house.

Family Room

Imagine a living space where you watch TV with the family, spend time playing with the kids, and have conversations with your kids. That is what we are talking about when we say family room—it's the room where you spend the most time with your family.

Formal Living Room

A formal living room is primarily a room for socializing and entertaining guests. While many families prefer to use one room as both a formal living room and family room, many have separate living spaces. At our home, we have both but tend to use them for opposite purposes. As a family, we spend more time in the formal living room because it is one of the best spots in the house.

Home Library

A home library speaks tons about you as a person. Many homes do not have a full-fledged library and instead designate one room for bookshelves. That counts as a home library as well. You can easily convert your attic into a stunning home library. All you need to do is add enough bookshelves, provide good lighting, and keep the space neat.

Great Room

It would be challenging to make a distinction between a formal living room and a great room in modern houses. In feudal times, palaces had huge courtyards where noblemen would hold court sessions and carry out important meetings. In the modern context, any room that occupies a central position can qualify as a great room. It is different from a living room in the sense that it is usually accessible from more than one side.

Game Room

You can tell by the name itself what a game room is. It is where you do all your fun activities, play games with your friends and family, and engage in thrilling competitions. Also known as an entertainment room, a game room is where you can enjoy games as extravagant as indoor football and pool or simple ones like card games and board games. It does not matter what you play, as long as you are using this room to entertain and have fun.

Home Bar

If you are a connoisseur of the spirits, a home bar is a perfect addition to your house. Many homeowners prefer to have a part of the living room act as the home bar, while others with more modern houses have a complete home bar setup. These dedicated home bars have almost all the arrangements of a commercial bar. The trend gained popularity in the Mad Men era of the 1960s.

A sunroom brings the outdoors indoors. It is typically a room of tall glass walls, allowing in as much sunlight as possible. A sunroom gives you the pleasure of the bright sun in the comfort of your home. Not all sunrooms are similar, but they are all built with the common principle of letting in maximum natural light.

Man Cave

Man caves celebrate masculinity and are dedicated spaces for men to spend their personal time. Unlike other rooms, there is no structure to a man cave. Anything from a basement to a garage can be a man cave. It often has things like video games or a bar. Wherever a man spends his quality time is a man cave.

Craft Room

A craft room is exactly what the name suggests—a room to hone your craft. Both adults and kids can use a craft room to practice what they enjoy and are good at. It can be sewing for adults, painting for kids, or vice versa. As more people are trying to spend quality time indoors, craft rooms are becoming more popular. As with a man cave, there is no specific model for a craft room. However, it must be somewhere silent, where others won't invade your space while you are practicing intently. Privacy is important for a craft room, as is comfort. You cannot hone your craft in a room that doesn't feel comfortable.

Wine Cellar

A wine cellar is for serious wine enthusiasts. I do not consider myself one and hence do not have a wine cellar at my home. But wine is evergreen, and its popularity is nowhere near a decline. Many homes now have wine cellars to showcase their impressive collections to guests. Wine cellars also have a dedicated tasting area, where you sample from the exquisite collections. Consider getting a wine cellar if you are a lover of wine and enjoy tasting and preserving exotic samples. A wine cellar is a reflection of your regal persona and must look and feel accordingly.

Home Theater

If you want to bring the cinema experience to your home, a home theater will be your best friend. There are two types of home theaters that you can choose from. First, you can have a mini theater setup at your home with screens and projectors. Alternatively, you can dedicate an entire room with a huge TV, good sound system, and lots of comfortable seating space as your home theater. Also known as a media room, a home theater is great for spending quality time with family while learning something or getting entertainment. Make sure your audio and video mechanisms are top-notch to ensure a great home theater.

Landing

A landing is the landing space between two staircases. We often overlook the beauty and utility of this space. I am personally a fan of landings and try to make the best use of them. They can double as fantastic office spaces, reading nooks, or simple, quiet seating spaces. Do not overlook landings simply because they are not made for any specific purpose. Its lack of fixed use is precisely what makes it so special. With creativity and planning, you can turn your landing into one of the most beautiful spots in your house. Before you know it, you will be spending all your time there.

Open Concept Living Room

An open concept living room is a modern equivalent of a great room, albeit much less grand. It is a spacious living area to unite several rooms in your house. It is usually a space that serves any function—from the kitchen to the living space. When one room serves the purpose of many, it becomes an open concept living room. One of the most common combinations is a living room, dining room, and kitchen.

Rec Room

At its core, a rec room is a basement with a television. However, the definition of rec room does not restrict you from using it for multiple purposes. You can incorporate a small bar into your rec room or get a pool table. In other words, you can add anything to your rec room that will make it a spot for recreation. When you want to unwind over some TV and a game of pool, you will go to your rec room. A rec room can be a hidden corner in your house where great treasures await.

Home Office

Home offices have become more of a norm as more people now work from home or spend a considerable amount of time doing so. Many home offices are extensions of open concept living spaces, and this is often a good idea. Having one's home office close to the living space makes it easy to communicate with family members when in need. It also gives you easy access to your computer and work devices whenever you are at home. However, I prefer a separate home office since it cuts down distractions.

Home Gym

Whether or not you are a gym rat, you need a home gym to take care of your health. On a personal level, I love working out in commercial gyms. But I totally understand why home gyms are a great option as well. With easy access to a host of instructional fitness videos, it is easy to work out at home and get a great physique. Depending on your needs, a home gym can be very modest with a cardio space and a few weights and pieces of exercise equipment. However, many serious gym-goers prefer to install high-end fitness equipment, which can cost a lot.

Finished Basement

Finished basements are great investment options as they increase your home's square footage by almost two times. While you can treat it as an investment option, you can also use it as a rec room or a guest room. You can even rent it out as a passive source of income. Finished basements are great for many reasons. I like them because they are great for escaping the summer heat. While many people do not like basements, I love them because of the possibilities they offer. There is a lot you can do with a finished basement, apart from increasing your home's value.

Reading Room

Not many houses have dedicated reading rooms. Since reading can be done anywhere quiet and distraction-free, many do not feel the need for a separate reading room. However, bookworms and avid readers do not feel the same. They prefer a separate living space where they can spend quiet time reading their favorite books. It is a place of utmost quiet and peace. A reading room can be further enhanced by adding comfortable seating fixtures with lights that soothe the eyes. If you love reading, a reading room will be your favorite spot in the house.
